Five Principles for your Project's Success
Having done my Malcolm-Gladwell-esque "10,000 hours of experience" (in his book Outliers, Gladwell suggests that it takes 10,000 hours for someone to become an experienced professional, in any field), I feel like there are some fixed principles that apply to all of our clients, who run the gamut from nonprofit to small business to public agency.
We've found that the individuals or organizations that are successful follow these five principles.
1. Figure out what you want.
If you don't know what you want, it's pretty difficult to get someone else on board with your vision. Attempt to discern, in as much detail as possible, your vision for your endeavor.
Top Ten Steps to Building your Business
My partner and I started our web design company with two Mac laptops, a burning drive and passion for connecting people to the Web, and our personal address books.
We were determined to focus on our core skills, which were converting ideas, needs, and processes into fully-functioning websites.
We wanted to support minority-owned, woman-owned, green, progressive, organic, holistic, sustainable people.
We wanted to focus on what we did best, and find other people to help us with the rest. As the company has grown, we've learned more. Here are some of the lessons I've learned --- you can keep them in mind as you build your own business.

There is no Hidden Secret to Success
Mon, 2010-02-22 00:42 | by monicadearOne thing that I've found, time and time again, is that there is no hidden "secret" to achieving what you want. The path is simple and it is plain to see. Directly in front of you, maybe underneath the piles of clutter and junk, is your destiny, the one in which you rise up and reach all of your full potential.
I believe that this "secret" is merely a truth that some of us have to remind ourselves about, over and over again. We can achieve our most amazing dreams.
What I do see is hard thinking, the ability to work smart, and a steadfast belief in your goal. I think the most easy ideas are sometimes the hardest ones to accomplish. For example:
Follow the Path and Go Straight to your Destination
Wed, 2010-02-17 05:09 | by monicadearI'm re-reading some of my favorite books from Paulo Coehlo: this time it's his first novel, "The Pilgrim", which is about his road through the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela.
There is an interesting section when his guide gives him a talking-to, and he realizes that he has been wandering the same section of the path for seven days because he has been so focused on his end result (the destination), rather than noticing what is happening around him, including the road, the scenery, the mountain, and the details on the path.
