Green Kid Crafts - a Mompreneur's Story

Hello, I’m Penny Bauder, the owner of Green Kid Crafts, an e-commerce company designed to become a market leader in subscription-based services that produce and deliver activities for kids. Like so many children’s products, Green Kid Crafts is a mother’s invention, born out of need. I’m a busy mom, but nothing is more precious to me than spending quality time interacting with my two children. Like many other parents, I want to spend my limited time connecting with them, not scrambling for ideas and shopping for things to do with them. I wanted to create something that would make life easier for parents like me while also setting the tone and expectation for how my children choose to live in the world. And this is where Green Kid Crafts comes in!

Subscribers to Green Kid Crafts receive monthly deliveries of 3 fun, eco-friendly arts, crafts, and science activities that spark creativity and cultivate respect and love for the environment. The activities are connected by a different theme each month and cover various developmental areas through art, science, and imaginative and active play. In keeping with the values of our purpose-driven company, all materials are eco-friendly and non-toxic.

Our projects are designed and tested by a community of awesome volunteer parent “experts”. This community of parents is at the heart of Green Kid Crafts and includes creative parents, grandparents, and specialists to ensure that we are delivering developmentally appropriate and inspiring activities while staying true to environmentally-friendly practices.

While I actually have a science background and no business schooling whatsoever (although I am enrolled in The Founder Institute Fall 2012 Session and was just awarded the Female Founder Fellowship – yay!), I’ve found that that the entrepreneur lifestyle is an exact match for my personality. Initially, I started Green Kid Crafts as sort of a hobby and a way to stay at home with my children while continuing to work and participate in the world. But I quickly discovered that through Green Kid Crafts, I was able to marry my deep environmental ethics with creativity and share this experience with not only my kids, but also with kids around the country. This I find deeply fulfilling.

Green Kid Crafts has a lot to celebrate recently! We have a large subscriber base that is growing rapidly. Since January, we’ve been growing at a monthly rate of 60%. We have an extremely active social media following and just reached the 1M mark on Pinterest! We have received a lot of buzz in the blogging world and have hundreds of great online reviews under our belt. We also just won Green America’s People and Planet Award.

Green Kid Crafts kids’ subscription service is bringing children closer to their environment through fun and creative activities and I hope that, as we grow, we will show people of all ages that taking care of the environment and each other should be a factor in everything they do. You can join our green community and encourage a love of nature and develop eco-awareness in your little ones at

As an environmentalist and a working mother of two, Penny Bauder saw a need for a convenient solution that would allow families to spend quality time together enjoying fun activities that bring them closer to nature. She started putting together kids craft kits for herself and her friends, and soon enough word spread and she found herself immersed in the concept full time and Green Kid Crafts was born.

Penny, her husband Jeff, and her children Rowan (3.5 years, a/k/a Ro Ro) and Declan (11 months, a/k/a Dex) live together in San Diego, California. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Management and an M.S. in Environmental Science. She has worked as a wilderness kayak ranger, a domestic violence counselor, an organic farmer, and an invasive plant biologist, none of which have anything whatsoever to do with being an entrepreneur.
