Seven Questions to Ask about Your Website’s Design

If you are starting a corporate webpage or even a family blog, you’re going to need some understanding of how to design it. There are a few things you will need to remember to keep users coming back to your site. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself when it comes to web design.

 

 

  • Organization. How organized is the page you are looking to show off? Is it confusing to the viewer? Do they get lost in the number of links and animations that cover your front page? Is there a consistent structure throughout your page from top to bottom? The more organized it is, the more inviting it will be to your audience overall.

 

  • Short Writing. An individual’s attention span while surfing the Web is considerably short, so you will only have a few seconds to try and keep their focus while they browse your page. Shorter sentences and paragraphs that make a clear, concise point will eventually lead to longer periods of viewing time, plain and simple.

 

  • Visual Appeal. From a strictly visual standpoint, how appealing is your webpage look? Are your colors too bold and contradictory or do they fit the vibe you are trying to create? What about the typography, background, and pictures you have uploaded as support? Do they invite your viewers to stay on your page or chase them away? If you have any downloadable flyers, business cards, maps, etc. make sure they stay consistent and don't lose their formatting by converting them to PDFs.   • Error Free. You can spend a significant amount of time trying to deliver a grade-A website. However, at the end of the day, the smallest error can ruin nearly everything you have done. Small flaws such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation on your homepage can instantly invalidate the product you are trying to deliver. Keep your site as professional as possible by hiring professional writers or, at the very least, asking multiple friends to look over the site for errors.    

 

  • Easy to Navigate. Nearly everyone is looking for the shortest, simplest route from point A to point B. Having easy access to that route is crucial when you are designing a basic webpage. How convenient is your website’s design when it comes to navigation? Can users get lost while trying to browse your site’s archives? The easier the route, the better your site will appear in their minds.

 

  • Up to Date. The World Wide Web is constantly changing, with the latest updates coming in every second. A good point to consider is whether your own site is up to date given all the changes. How long has it been since you have posted on your blog? What was the latest content you uploaded? Have you downloaded the newest version of software? All of these are factors to consider in keeping your website’s design up to date.

 

  • Contact Info. A minor question that often gets overlooked is whether your viewers can contact you. Do you have your e-mail address, phone number, or social media profiles listed as a point of contact? Digital connection is the way the world now communicates. You need to ask yourself whether you are giving your audience access to who you are online.

 

Building a website takes a significant amount of planning and skill if you want to deliver a quality product. Working to develop your own web design skills could potentially turn your creative ideas into paychecks. You must regularly question the current effectiveness of your website, including its navigation, visual appeal, and simplicity. In the long run, this practice will continue to boost traffic to your site.
