The Importance of Keeping Lists
If someone asked you what your goals were, would you be able to tell them immediately?
Starting in high school, I kept a laminated piece of paper with “the list” inside my wallet and would pull it out every so often. At the time it included items like “see the Great Pyramids of Giza” and “learn how to cook”.
As many items on that original list have been crossed off, I’ve been creating new lists — and keeping them on me at all times. I’ve posted my goals list online and I’m truly committed to learning as much as I can, and doing as much as I can, to create positive social change with the gift of my life.
What is on your personal affirmation list, or your spiritual development list, or your list of what to accomplish (the “big” list, not the daily to-do list)??
I’ve organized a few lists and I encourage you to think about organizing them for your own life too.
These include:
1) People who are my dearest friends
2) Speaking engagements where I participate
3) Conferences I attend
4) Positive affirmations
5) What I feel I must accomplish in my lifetime
6) My Core Values
7) A Quicklist of what I expect for the next 5 years - year by year
8) Where to Travel
9) Achievements that bring me joy
10) Priorities
When I have a long list of items that’s been prioritized and vetted, I have a better sense of how my day-to-day work fits in to my overall goal. I can track my own progress against my own timeline, and I can see how each of the new developments in my life right now is in keeping with where I plan to be 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years out.
Your list will be easily overcome with the minutiae of day-to-day life, unless you make sure you have the big things on that list first.
What's on your list?
