As a small business owner, you know how tricky it can be to navigate the shark-infested waters of the marketplace. But promotion is everything, which means that you need to be especially capable at marketing yourself in order to succeed. But with so many different ways to promote yourself, where can you possibly begin ... and how can you make sure that you stand out from the rest of your competitors? Never fear! Here are a few suggestions for how to cheaply and uniquely promote your small business.

Network it! This is an easier practice than ever, thanks to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. But don't just stop at creating your Facebook page and leaving it out there for web wanderers to stumble upon. Be proactive! Offer a sale or a discount and make it known only by using those social networking sites. Create a blog for your business and promote it via Facebook. Feature "The Customer or Vendor of the Week!" so that your clientele will feel the love. You can also hold an event and advertise it paperlessly via your website, blog, and your social networking sites. Have candy and pens or stationary with your business available to hand out.

Go green! Eco-friendly is in, and the more environmentally conscious you show you are, the more popular you'll be! Find reasons to write about your green practices on your blog, whether you've assembled a team of your brightest employees to head up a committee on sustainability, you've sponsored a clean-up program for local parks, or you've created display stands and banner stands out or recycled materials. Your sustainable savvy will net you fabulous promotional ideas and bring in a broader variety of clients and customers.

Get published! You could pay thousands of dollars for an ad in the local paper ... or you could write your very own article and get it published for free. The key here is not to just write an advertisement for yourself, but to provide your customers with some essential information that they can use in their daily lives.

Teach it! Use your business skills and acumen to hold a class or presentation that will offer valuable knowledge or some essential know-how that will teach your budding client base a thing or two while increasing it at the same time. Just be sure that the class you're offering hasn't been done before. If it feels repetitive, consider options that will allow you to put your own particular spin on it. Think life experience! How have you gotten to where you are today?

Preach it! Small transparent plastic advertisement holders are all the rage right now, and you can usually find them in local businesses like restaurants, coffee shops, or hair salons. They are usually - but not always - found in the bathroom, and provide a unique and exciting way for you to promote your business. Come up with a sassy poster and slogan preaching to the world why they should come to you!
