Lorrain Taylor and the story of 1000 Mothers
I want to share with you the story of Lorrain Taylor, a survivor of gun violence, who has used the experience of the loss of her twin sons to create a flourishing new ministry to care for other survivors.
Taylor’s twin boys were murdered at the age of 22 years old while they were both working on their mom’s car outside, in Oakland’s Dimond district. Out of this horrific tragedy, she has taken this experience and touched other people’s lives for the better. Even in the depth of her loss, she shares her story with other mothers and families, and she has been able to create community, sharing, and hope where there was nothing.
“She has the biggest heart — a heart of gold. Every week Lorrain brings me food, prays with me, prays for me. She has a very positive attitude about everything. I’m amazed that she can be so joyful and strong after losing two sons,” said Sherry Smith, whose son was killed in October 2006.
Taylor visits the families of homicide victims in Oakland and other Bay Area communities: she stops by with food, support, and a hug. She also runs a monthly community gathering called the C.O.P.E. Support Group (Circle of Prayer and Empowerment), and she speaks at churches and community gatherings. As a musician, she also shares music from her CD “Gumbo for My Soul.” Listen to some selections online at www.lorraintaylor.com.
Tragedy has planted the seeds of compassion in Taylor’s heart, and out of her loss, a new nonprofit has been created. Called 24/7 Gospel, Inc., this organization assists victims and survivors of gun violence with compassionate support, information and advocacy in order to meet the specific needs of the person and/or family. They offer food, education, musical presentations, and related services. Support Taylor’s work online at: www.1000mothers.org.
