Resource Documents for Women wanting to Develop a Website

June 9th, 2008

I’m attaching some documents that I’m using for a presentation at the Hawaii Women’s Business Center this Thursday. My presentation is targeted to those women in business who have very little budget but who realize that getting started with their website is the main task at hand. Everything on a website grows from establishing those first few pages, much like a large tree starts out as a small little seed, or much like a million-dollar business starts with the first customer.

My talk focuses on free and low-cost ways to implement a startup site. I’ll also address how business owners and consultants may prepare their “strategic plan” of how to market their unique skills and knowledge. We’ll cover content management, open source solutions, design, payment processing, networking, and the importance of updating content. We’ll also review Google Adsense, Google Analytics, and my own tips on domain names, hosting, group management, mailing lists, and social networking.

In general, realize that with planning, some expert guidance in implementation, and a lot of love, you as a business owner or consultant will do well, and as you grow your business, you’ll use your knowledge and skills gained to adequately and effectively take advantage of a better team of professionals, including web helpers. who will assist you in “taking it to the next level.”

The files include a powerpoint file, a PDF for download, and some additional files and links that you may review.

1) Powerpoint:

3) Did you know that you can develop HTML files in Notepad or Textpad? It’s easy if you use simple text (no formatting or rich text) and save as a .html file. Here’s a sample HTML file for you to start editing:
Sample HTML file and Image of a handshake
(Save these two documents to a folder on your desktop, then open “Sample_to_edit.html” in a new browser window.

Filezilla:
This is a free FTP program (File Transfer Protocol) that allows you to upload files from your hard drive and place them on your hosting.

I also highly recommend you get an e-version of my book, “Fifty-one Ways to Build your Community of Clients Online,” which is 240 pages full of easy-to-understand tips to help you make the most of your website. Fifty-one Ways
